Joumee - the Dancing Hedgehog!
Among many animated characters I ever created, Joumee the Dancing Hedhehog is definitely one of my favourite cartoon characters which I created long time ago. I used him once for a big private commercial movie project in 2007, and since then it turned to be my hobbie animation project which I return to from time to time when I have free time. It’s mostly short videos featuring cute little hedgehog with soft curly hair instead of the needles dancing to the beats of famous songs 🙂
Since I first posted it on YouTube, it got extremely popular becoming a true meme, gaining millions of views and positive comments mostly thanking for extreme positivity and motivation this dancing little guy always emits. And quite expectedly, it was shared and reshared many times across almost all of the modern social networks (mostly without my permission) constantly recieving countless reshares across all social media many of which ended up gaining even more views.

Here Joumee the Dancing Hedgehog dances to Italian Tarantella. I found this song while browsing AudioJungle music library and thought it would be cool to make a short dance sequence with Joumee rocking to this song! 🤘
Joumee the Hedgehog dances to Weeknd's Blinding Lights!
So just the brief info. I shot the whole sequence on my iphone in 4K/24fps, the camera tracking was done in SynthEyes, which I find quite fantastic by the way. Modeling was done in 3D Studio Max, compositing – in Adobe AfterEffects, and then I just imported all the tracked data and the model to Autodesk Maya where I rendered the whole sequence using Maya’s native Arnold which is also great from all perspectives!

Having seen so many cool parodies and variations of this dance I thought it would be cool to have Joumee do it as well 🙂 So I jumped into Maya and animated it having one oi the cool tik tok videos with this dance as a video reference.

I fell in love with this song while I was on my way to the office, so I decided to shoot a live video with my iphone and integrate dancing character to it later. Camera tracking was done in SynthEyes, animation and rendering in Autodesk Maya.
